ECOTOX is the Ecotoxicology and Marine Pollution research group in the Faculty of Marine Science at the University of Vigo. Our multidisciplinary team delivers expert ecotoxicological and environmental assessments across coastal ecosystems.
We conduct high‑quality research on marine pollution, developing strategies to mitigate threats to protect ecosystem integrity. By generating robust scientific evidence, we inform environmental standards and criteria that safeguard marine habitats, contributing to marine conservation and the sustainable use of ocean resources.
Our work is supported by projects funded through public bodies (EU, Spanish, and Galician agencies) and collaborations with private partners. To date, ECOTOX has delivered 12 doctoral dissertations, published over 130 peer‑reviewed articles, and secured more than 50 research contracts.
We operate from stateoftheart laboratories at the Toralla Marine Science Station (ECIMAT), a facility of the European Marine Biological Research Centre|European Research Infrastructure Consortium (EMBRC-ERIC). Our infrastructures include mesocosm facilities, sensor-equipped experimental rafts and technological platforms for marine research. We also supply marine biological resources, cultivate model organisms, and enable access to coastal sites for sample collection and analysis of water samples, sediment and biota.
With our strong scientific track record and institutional standing, ECOTOX plays a pivotal role in informing marine policies at regional, national, and international levels. We bridge research, industry, and policymakers to ensure that marine innovation aligns with societal and commercial needs.
